Our Schools
Excerpt from Herald Sun, August 6, 2012:
James Key, area superintendent for Durham's high schools, said DPS is partnering with the North Carolina New Schools Project to subdivide Southern into four distinct academies within a comprehensive high school. "We're proud of Southern's accomplishments in the past school year, but we're excited it is completely transforming into the Southern School of Energy and Sustainability," Key said.
Southern already had its School of Engineering. Now, it will also have schools of Infrastructure Engineering, Business Management Sustainability and Biomedical Technology. Key expects to see more project-based learning activities. "What this really means is that students can work in four separate academies, be part of smaller teams, but still part of a comprehensive high school," he said.
